🛑 What Happens When Petrol is Put in a Diesel Car?

The primary issue is that diesel and petrol have fundamentally different properties and perform different roles within the engine.

1. Loss of Lubrication (The Biggest Problem)

  • Diesel is an oil: Diesel fuel is naturally oily and acts as a lubricant for the precision-engineered parts of the fuel system, including the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

  • Petrol is a solvent: Petrol is abrasive and acts as a solvent. When it mixes with the diesel, it quickly strips away the necessary layer of lubrication.

  • The Result: The metal components in the pump start rubbing against each other without lubrication. This causes metal shavings (swarf) to contaminate the entire fuel system, leading to potentially catastrophic damage to the pump and injectors.

2. High-Pressure Pump Failure

  • Modern common-rail diesel systems operate at extremely high pressures (up to 2,000 bar or more). These pumps are highly sensitive.

  • The lack of lubrication from the petrol can cause the pump's components to seize or fail very quickly.

3. Engine Running Issues (If the engine is started)

If you manage to start the engine, the mixed fuel will cause the car to run poorly, if at all.

  • Knocking/Sputtering: The lower viscosity of the mixed fuel changes how it is injected and burned, leading to misfiring or a loud knocking sound.

  • Smoke: You may notice excessive smoke (white or black) coming from the exhaust.

  • Engine Warning Light: The engine management system will likely detect issues with combustion or pressure and illuminate the dashboard warning light.

⚠️ What You Must Do Immediately

The amount of damage is directly related to how far the contaminated fuel has moved through the system.

  1. If you haven't started the engine: DO NOT turn the ignition key, even to check the fuel gauge. Turning the key often activates the lift pump, which can circulate the wrong fuel from the tank into the lines and injection system.

    • Action: Put the car in neutral, alert the fuel station staff, and call a professional wrong fuel service immediately. The fuel will need to be drained from the tank only, which is the cheapest and easiest fix.

  2. If you have started and driven the car: Pull over safely as soon as you notice the car sputtering or losing power, and turn the engine off immediately. Do not attempt to restart it.

    • Action: Call our professional wrong fuel service. The fuel will need to be drained from the tank, fuel lines, and filter, followed by a system flush.
