You realise the mistake a second too late. The nozzle goes back, the receipt prints, and then it hits you - petrol in a diesel, diesel in a petrol, or another contaminant in the tank. In that moment, one of the most common questions we hear is: can wrong fuel damage injectors? That said, the level of damage depends on what went in, how much was added, whether the engine was started, and how far the vehicle was driven afterwards. Older petrol vehicles might tolerate a very small amount of diesel better than newer ones, but modern engines are generally less forgiving. Direct injection petrol engines also use precise injector systems, and contamination can lead to rough running, smoke, hesitation and misfires.
The trade-off here is that the risk profile is different. You may be less likely to see immediate internal wear from lack of lubrication than with petrol in a diesel, but you are still risking injector fouling, poor performance and a more complicated clean-up if you keep driving.
What actually damages the injectors?
The damage is not always from one single event. Often, it is a combination of poor lubrication, contamination, heat and debris moving through the system. In a diesel engine filled with petrol, the injector internals can wear because the protective fuel film is no longer doing its job. In a petrol engine filled with diesel, the injector tip can become coated with deposits that interfere with atomisation.
If the engine starts misfiring or knocking, combustion becomes less controlled. That can add stress elsewhere and worsen the injector problem. In severe cases, damaged pumps can release fine metal fragments into the fuel system. Those particles may then reach the injectors and cause further harm.
