What Happens When You Put the Wrong Fuel in a Car?

Petrol in a Diesel Car

This is the most common mistake. Petrol acts as a harsh solvent in a diesel system, stripping away the essential lubrication required by your high-pressure fuel pump. If the engine is started, metal friction can create fine shavings that ruin your entire fuel setup.

  • Our Solution: We completely pump out the wrong fuel, flush the fuel lines, change or clean the fuel filter elements, fill the tank with fresh diesel, and prime the system safely.

Diesel in a Petrol Car

Because petrol nozzles are usually smaller than diesel nozzles, this happens less frequently, but it is still highly common. Diesel cannot ignite properly in a spark-ignition engine, which causes the car to smoke heavily, misfire, clog the catalytic converter, and eventually cut out.

  • Our Solution: We siphon the heavy diesel out of the tank, clear out the fuel lines, clean off the spark plugs, fill up with fresh petrol, and start the vehicle to safely burn off any remaining residue.

How to Use What3Words for a Faster Rescue

What3Words has divided the entire world into 3-metre squares and gave each one a unique combination of three words. This is far more accurate than a standard GPS pin or trying to describe a "green field near Bury St Edmunds."

  1. Open the App or Website: Go to what3words.com on your phone.

  2. Find Your Location: Tap the "locate me" button (the crosshair icon).

  3. Read the 3 Words: You will see three words separated by dots (e.g., ///filled.count.soap).

  4. Tell Our Technician: When you call us, give us those three words. Our Forecourt Rescue Suffolk van will be able to navigate directly to your exact 3-metre square.
